Our Review
The Egyptian Museum of Antiquities in Tahrir Square is one of the most storied museums on Earth. Since opening in 1902 in its distinctive pink neoclassical building designed by French architect Marcel Dourgnon, it has served as the primary repository for Egypt's pharaonic treasures and a pilgrimage site for historians, archaeologists, and curious travelers from around the world.
The museum's collection exceeds 120,000 objects arranged across two floors and more than 100 rooms. The ground floor is organized chronologically, while the upper floor is grouped thematically, covering topics such as daily life, death and funerary practices, writing and language, and royal power. Key highlights include the royal mummy room, predynastic artifacts from Naqada, Old Kingdom statues of remarkable realism, and Middle Kingdom jewelry of astonishing delicacy.
While the Grand Egyptian Museum now houses the complete Tutankhamun collection, the original museum at Tahrir Square retains its unique atmospheric charm โ a densely packed treasury where unexpected discoveries await around every corner, and where the weight of three millennia of civilization is palpable in every corridor.
