Hegra (Mada'in Saleh)

AlUla, Saudi Arabia Β· Rating: β˜… 4.9

Our Review

Hegra, also known as Mada'in Saleh, is Saudi Arabia's first UNESCO World Heritage Site and arguably the most spectacular archaeological destination in the Arabian Peninsula. Located in the AlUla valley of northwestern Saudi Arabia, this ancient Nabataean city was the southern capital of the civilization that also built Petra in modern-day Jordan.

The site comprises 131 monumental tombs with elaborately carved facades cut directly into sandstone outcrops, alongside wells, inscription stones, and the remains of a Nabataean settlement that thrived as a trading hub along the ancient incense route between the 1st century BCE and the 1st century CE. The tombs display a fascinating blend of Nabataean, Egyptian, and Greco-Roman architectural elements, reflecting the cosmopolitan nature of these ancient traders.

Unlike its more famous sister city Petra, Hegra has been remarkably well-preserved due to its remote location and the Saudi government's careful conservation efforts. The combination of pristine archaeological remains, dramatic desert landscape, and the sheer scale of the carved facades makes Hegra an experience of genuine wonder β€” a place where the ancient world feels startlingly present.

As part of Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030 development strategy, AlUla and Hegra are being developed as a world-class heritage tourism destination under the Royal Commission for AlUla, with new visitor facilities, luxury resorts, and cultural programming designed to share this extraordinary heritage with a global audience.
